We have to ask ourselves: what is our audience trying to answer when they read/seem/think “benefits?” They have a mental model of “benefits” such as health, money, energy, time savings, etc. They need to be triggered by something. The more specific we can make our question (e.g., “what are the health benefits”) or word (e.g., “benefits”), the better chance we’ll give them – and ourselves – the benefit.

In this blog post, I’d like to explain why we use the term “elderberry” in our product marketing rather than just “elderberries.”
It is a term that has been around for centuries. It refers to the berries of a species of tree, Sambucus nigra, native to North America and Europe.
The tree is known as black Elderberry (Sambucus nigra), which also has a slightly different meaning in Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the world where there are no native Sambucus species.
The name comes from the Latin word “ostium,” meaning “outlet” or “opening,” and suggests that it was named for its opening — so it was named because it opened when squeezed (no wonder it tastes so good!).
The practice of using black Elderberry (or elderberry tea) dates back at least 2,500 years ago when several early civilizations were using herbal medicines based on this plant as an alternative to smoking tobacco.
In Western Europe, black elderberry tea was used to treat various ills, including asthma and rheumatism, during the Middle Ages. Its benefits were thought to be due to its high content of flavonoids such as quercetin (the compound responsible for its strong taste).
